9 Leadership Lessons from One of Canada’s 100 Most Powerful Women, Anne Martin

If you weren’t at our event last night featuring CEO Global Network Members whose companies have been recognized as some of “Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies”, you missed out. We had an outstanding night of discussion, networking, dinner and learning! Thanks to John Hughes of Deloitte and Founder of the 50 Best Program for moderating, and also to our CEO Members who participated in the panel: Michael Burrows (CEO – Maple Lodge Farms), Chris Gower (EVP – PCL Constructors Ltd.), Anne Martin (President - United Van Lines) and Mike Reinders (President – Maple Reinders Group Ltd.). These four CEOs were able to share how they’ve achieved serious success to be recognized as a top company in Canada.

Here’s a great example of the kind of CEO thinking that was featured on the panel. Just this week, Anne Martin was featured in a fantastic article in the Mississauga Business Times. Have a look at the cover for their September 2011 issue:

Some of our favourite quotes from the article:

“Over the years, Anne has overcome many business challenges, not the least of which is that the relocation industry has been slowly and steadily contracting for 20 years. UVL and its members are continually challenged to identify and leverage their strengths and to diversity.”

“UVL has long been recognized as a well run, top performing organization. With Anne at the helm they achieved the distinction of being one of Deloitte’s ‘Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies’. Anne was also recognized with an award from ‘Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women’ in 2010.”

“Anne Martin is one of those women that has succeeded in business without acting like a man or playing her girl card in a game primarily dominated by men. ‘I made sure I was prepared and had a worthwhile opinion. I did my homework and earned respect. I am not afraid to take risks and make mistakes.’”

“Asked for her advice for young women with a goal to succeed in business, Anne easily comes up with a series of inspiring statements:

  • It’s about the talent.
  • Be assertive.
  • Take a leadership role.
  • Have a plan.
  • Find a mentor.
  • Create and seize opportunities.
  • Make decisions.
  • Be authentic.
  • Be prepared to speak up and to be better than a man, or you’ll get passed over.

Coming from someone of Anne’s accomplishments, this advice packs a lot of credibility. And she clearly lives every word of her own advice.”

Congratulations to Anne and all the outstanding CEOs on our panel last night. And thank you for sharing with the Members, Leaders, and friends of CEO Global Network in attendance.

Keep your eyes posted on the blog for a wrap-up of the panel discussion, including highlights, video clips and pictures.

Indeed, women CEOs face different challenges than their male counterparts. Thank you for this interesting sum-up!

Thanks for the comment! Different challenges, yes, but I also believe women carry a number of different strengths and advantages when it comes to leadership.
